Our Story

Our Inspiration and beginnings

In 2017, Kenyan students in Turkey began distributing Ramadhan food packs to communities back home using contributions from their student allowances a tradition that continues today. From this initiative, the BUSARA Empowerment Organization was born. Busara, meaning wisdom in Swahili, was later developed into a Community-Based Organization by three of the students, with the goal of providing sustainable support that enables communities to grow, prosper, and ultimately overcome poverty.

Our Growth and Motivation

Busara Empowerment Organization then transitioned to more projects such as Hygiene-pack distribution, Shallow well constructions in Tana River, Kwale, Kakamega to mention a few, that are experiencing water scarcity, Solar panel installations in areas with no access to electricity and community center rehabilitation projects with activities such as mentorship programs for teenagers and youth in villages around Nairobi.

From CBO to NGO, The turning point

In 2020, the organization was ready to take the next step and in 2022 it acquired its NGO
status. This has allowed the NGO extend its grasp to additional parts of Kenya such as
Western, North Eastern and Central Kenya with the goal to reach all parts of the country that
could benefit from its program and ultimately the East African Region

At Busara, we are more than just improving living conditions. Our journey is about understanding that WE are ALL in this Together. Thus, we do not discriminate based on religion, race, gender, cultural, political ideologies or social differences. We endeavor to build healthy connections between our donors and our beneficiaries.

I was born and raised in Nairobi. I am also a Co – founder and CEO of Busara Empowerment Organization. Before Busara became a reality, I had spent most of my teenage and adult life as a volunteer for many community development organizations, something I still enjoy doing.

Omer Faruk Arslan

I was born and raised in Turkey.  I studied International Relations.Growing up I wanted to become a diplomat but I found myself in the humanitarian Aid and Community Development sector. Since 2018 I have been working with different INGO’s and NGO’s in different roles. Presently, I am managing International Funds and building partnerships with INGO’s and NGO’s from different countries.

My role focuses on documenting our programs, sharing impact stories, and helping communicate the work Busara is doing within the community. Through media and storytelling, I enjoy highlighting the journeys of the people we serve and the positive change taking place through our initiatives.
