Elimu Program

Elimu translates to Education in Swahili. This program is intended to focus not just on the performance of the student but social and economic background and his/her talents. It is not limited to students only; we also target madrasa teachers. We provide stipends to deserving madrasa teachers. This is intended to allow them to focus more on teaching rather than other economic activities to support themselves and their families. It also involves the distribution of scholastic equipment as well as setting up libraries in madrasas, children’s homes, and other needy community centers. Our dream is to eventually have our own educational centers in the future.

Scholastic and meal Support

This type of support is dedicated to primary schools and madrasa in Kenya. Schools in Kenya are facing a growing problem of a lack of food and resources. This is having a severe impact on the educational outcomes of students in the country. Recent research from the World Food Program (WFP) has shown that nearly half of the primary school children in Kenya are not receiving the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development. This is due to a lack of food and resources in the country's primary schools.

The WFP report also states that over 20% of pupils attending public primary schools in Kenya are chronically malnourished. This is having a direct effect on the academic performance of pupils, with the WFP noting that there has been a decline in educational attainment among pupils in the country's primary schools.

The lack of food and resources in Kenyan schools is also leading to a decrease in attendance and concentration among pupils. According to the Ministry of Education, there has been an 11% reduction in attendance in primary schools since 2011. This is leading to a decrease in the number of students graduating from primary school. The lack of food and resources in primary schools in Kenya is also resulting in an increase in school dropouts. The Ministry of Education estimates that over 35,000
students drop out.

Education Support

This project targets high school / secondary school students.

As Kenya continues to develop and its population grows, the literacy levels of its citizens remain a challenge. The slums of Kenya are particularly challenging because of their limited access to education and resources. Captured in recent statistics, only 33.8% of the population aged 15 and above is literate, and the literacy level in slums and villages is even lower.

According to research, the literacy rate in slums and rural areas of Kenya is much lower than the national average. In particular, the literacy rate among
those living in slums stands at just 28.3%, while the rate in rural areas is 27.4%. This is an alarming statistic, especially because these areas are home to the country's most vulnerable populations.

The lack of education in the slums of Kenya is largely due to the lack of resources available. Schools in the slums often lack basic supplies, such as textbooks and writing materials, and many are in disrepair. Many children in the slums are unable to attend school due to the lack of money for school fees, and those that do attend often have to do so at substandard schools. In addition, many children in the slums are forced to find work to supplement their family’s income, which can prevent them from attending school.

Without the necessary educational resources, students are unable to reach their full potential. This lack of education limits their prospects, as they are unable to attend higher education and gain the necessary skills to. At Busara, our contribution to solving this challenge is providing school fee support for needy high school students. This is one of our growing projects that we know can change the future of many talented, deserving young Kenyans.

Partial Schorlaship

We recognize that Busara is still growing and has a long way to go. We chose to see our limitations as steppingstones that will allow us to eventually achieve our goal. For universities and colleges, we provide support such as accommodation costs, monthly stipend as well as initial shopping for freshmen students. The idea is to eventually be able to provide sponsorship for their education as well.
